At trial, Kilpatrick makes big fashion statement
Detroit — Whenever Kwame Kilpatrick wears a bow tie to his federal trial, it brings to the minds of some the Nation of Islam.
But the tie and horn-rimmed glasses sometimes accompanying it have more to do with TV character Steve Urkel than Louis Farrakhan, said friends.
Geek chic, popularized by rappers and NBA superstars, involves wearing accessories normally associated with nerds.
Not even a 38-count indictment and public corruption trial can distract Hizzoner from the latest fashion trend.
"He is one sharp dressed man," said Rod Brown, co-owner of The Shirt Box, a men's clothes store in Farmington Hills. "Kwame doesn't miss a beat."
The trial resumes today after a two-week break due to an attorney's illness.
Earlier in the trial, a political supporter testified that Kilpatrick had demanded $10,000 to buy suits during a city trip to Dubai in 2002.
He then ditched a dinner party with high-ranking government officials to buy the suits, according to testimony.
While his snazzy outfits may play well in Los Angeles or New York, they won't score many points inside a federal courtroom in Detroit, said jury consultants.
The Detroit News asked jury consultants, image experts and fashion designers about Kilpatrick's seemingly endless supply of suits.
Showing them photos of what he wears to court, flower girl dress - hope the paper asked how the jury might be responding to our political Beau Brummell.
First, said the experts, the former mayor needs to lower the plumage. His clothes shouldn't be bright enough to illuminate swaths of downtown at night.
"It might be better to be properly attired but more understated and humble in appearance," said Philip Anthony, chief executive of DecisionQuest, a national jury consulting firm based in Los Angeles.
Kilpatrick also needs to lose the bold stripes and wide lapels, said others.
They make him look like a gangster, which is problematic when one is fighting charges of corruption.
"Kwame's suits have always come off as a little slick, and not 'slick' in a good way," said Joe Faris, a Detroit fashion designer who was a contestant on "Project Runway."
"His choices were once considered stylish and funky before the scandal. Now he comes off as felonious."
Several experts liked Kilpatrick's crisp suits but said even that could hurt him. Looking so prosperous while claiming to have little money could make jurors suspicious, they said.
In fact, he may be feeling the financial strain. Several of his recent suits are nearly identical to ones he wore to court during his last tussle with the legal system in 2008, according to a review of old newspaper photos.
In his book, "Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick," he chafed at being told to dress more conservatively during elections.
Campaign handlers also advised him to ditch his diamond earring. He didn't want to because it was made from his original wedding ring, he wrote. He wore it out of love!
He complained that the media were too focused on his appearance while the city was withering. But others said the same thing about him.
"A city weeps from hardship while fat cats sully a once-proud town's blue collar grit," wrote GQ magazine.
Kilpatrick may do so grudgingly but he's capable of dressing appropriately, said longtime Kilpatrick watchers. When it comes to clothes, they said, there are two Kwame Kilpatricks.
There is jaunty Kwame, he of the purple or lime green suits or the all-white ensemble — suit, tie, shirt — that made the cover of the hip-hop magazine, Don Diva.
Then there's somber Kwame, the political candidate. His colors were more muted.
Kilpatrick prefers the jaunty version, said his longtime clothier, Larry Alebiosu, owner of Fashion International in Southfield.
Kilpatrick likes things that stand out: pinstripes, French cuffs, pocket squares, large watches, gold rings.
"He was a guy who was confident," said Alebiosu. "He's not afraid to wear clothes."
Besides being flashy, the pinstripes had the added benefit of making the once 310-pound Kilpatrick appear thinner.
Kilpatrick, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall, bragged on his Facebook page in May that his weight was down to 264 pounds.
"They called me Fat at 18 but Fine at 41. Dig that," he wrote.
His suits cost between $500 and $1,000 while his shirts were $125, said Alebiosu.
The clothes, whose prices were discounted, were custom-made because it's difficult to find something off the rack for someone that big, said the haberdasher.
"We were like, aaah, this guy, what's he getting indicted for?" Rock told a magazine reporter. "And then we see 'MAYOR OF DETROIT.' We're like, oh (expletive), it's the new mayor of Detroit."
Who would later, as it turned out, be indicted.
With the disgraced mayor having moved to Texas several years ago, Metro Detroiters may have forgotten, or wished they had, about Kilpatrick's sartorial splendor.
His appearances in court the past few weeks gave a preview — a fall fashion review, if you will — of what the ex-mayor is up to.
Gone are the flourishes, the bold patterns and the shiny accoutrements. He still has his beloved pinstripes, but they're much fainter, barely visible from a distance.
The somber Kilpatrick is on full display. Other fashionistas dress by season. Kilpatrick dresses by the court calendar.
His muted look didn't stop catcalls from two Detroit women when he left the federal courthouse after a pretrial hearing in August.
"Ex-mayor or not, he looked damn good," said Shimika Watson, 29.
Her friend, Porscha Albritton, 25, agreed.
"My future husband," she sighed about the still-married Kilpatrick. "What a sexy man."
Of course, all this talk about fashion and coordinated clothes becomes moot if things go badly in court. In prison, everything matches.

Kilpatrick dresses, doesn't buckle
Kilpatrick, who declined comment, may not appreciate the advice. In his book, "Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick," he chafed at being told to dress more conservatively during elections.

A prescient observation
It was one of Kilpatrick's flashy suits that caught the eye of Chris Rock. The comedian was watching C-SPAN with a friend in 2002 when Kilpatrick appeared on the screen."We were like, aaah, this guy, what's he getting indicted for?" Rock told a magazine reporter. "And then we see 'MAYOR OF DETROIT.' We're like, oh (expletive), it's the new mayor of Detroit."

Police release photos of Amegy Bank robbery suspect
HOUSTON – Police are searching for a man who left a trail of bills
after a robbery Wednesday in the 1200 block of Hempstead Highway in
northwest Houston.
The robber ran from the bank with so much cash that he couldn’t hold on to all of it, police said. A trail of dollar maternity wedding gowns bills littered the parking lot.
Surveillance photos show the bank robbery suspect wore what appeared to be a gold wedding band on his left ring finger.
A second Amegy was robbed earlier Wednesday at 1502 Eldridge Parkway and was under investigation. The two robberies are not believed to be connected at this time.

Red Carpet Green Dress contest deadline pushed to Nov. 15
We've just received word that due to the effects of super storm Sandy, the deadline for designer submissions to the 2013 Red Carpet Green how accessories dress wedding guest competition, initially set for Nov. 5, has been extended by 10 days to Nov. 15.
Organizers of the challenge released the following statement:
"To accommodate designers in the USA, Cuba and Haiti who have been struggling, due to Superstorm Sandy, to finish materials by November 5th, Suzy Amis Cameron, Red Carpet Green Dress Founder, and Samata Angel, Global Campaign Director, have decided to extend the deadline for all potential entrants to Thursday, November 15th.
Just off the heels of this devastating storm that was fueled by circumstances relating to climate change, there couldn't be a more fitting time to amp up the conversation of sustainability as it relates to fashion. 'We want to ensure that everyone interested in entering this competition, where ever they are based, is given a fair chance at this fantastic, life-changing opportunity to make a statement on behalf of sustainable fashion," proclaims Amis Cameron. "And our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.'"
The winner of the contest, which challenges designers to create a gown made entirely of sustainable materials, will see their creation worn on the red carpet at the 2013 Academy Awards on Feb. 24.
There's also been one additional bit of news since we first mentioned this year's contest in September: fashion designer and longtime environmental advocate Vivienne Westwood will be the contest's fourth judge (along with Amis Cameron, Zem Joaquin and Lewis Perkins) and serve as a mentor to the winning designer.

Middle-class voyeurism and the ‘rednexploitation’ of Honey Boo Boo
In North America, our caste systems might not be as apparent as in
other parts of the world, but we certainly don’t live in a classless
society. Defining yourself by your class seems like a rather
anachronistic thing to do, but sometimes I can’t help but think about
where I might fit in on the grand social hierarchy. Every time I step on
a plane, I take a look at the business class executives enjoying
champagne in their reclining cocoon seats and realize that I’m
definitely a few rungs down the ladder.
Our underlying socioeconomic divisions are perhaps most evident in the world of reality television. Popular docu-lite programs such as Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding establish definite class boundaries between the viewers and the characters.
Best categorized as laugh-and-point programming, these shows feature ensembles of rednecks and gypsies who are portrayed in a way that captures our fascination but also works to marginalize their way of life. And while these shows might be entertaining at times, they also frame issues around poverty, bad nutrition, lack of education, violence and alcoholism — as punch lines rather than problems.
The worlds of child brides and pigs for pets are so far removed from our own that they provide us with a fixed point of reference from which to establish our own superiority. Viewers comfort themselves in the knowledge that we are in some ways “better” than the overweight hillbillies from America’s Deep South or the trailer-dwelling Irish Travellers of the British countryside.
These families are being exploited in the name of cheap entertainment as a way to satisfy our own middle-class curiosity. Urbane cable subscribers can slum it for an hour or so before going back to their regularly scheduled lives.
But you have to wonder if the individuals who appear on these shows are really being exploited or if they’re simply taking advantage an opportunity. Are Honey Boo Boo’s redneck clan and the Roma families of the U.K. cashing in on our fascination with the unknown and playing up their lifestyles for a profit?
Some argue that these reality stars enjoy the attention (even when it’s negative) and are happy to use their per-episode-paycheques to better their lives. So where’s the real harm in that?
While you could say it’s a win-win-win situation for all — the viewers, the reality stars, and most definitely the television networks — we can’t ignore the problematic aspects of these exploitative shows.
Frankly, all of the ‘sketti’ and hair spray is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Revenge Recap: A Wedding, an Engagement and a Death
Last week, we watched Kara Clarke (Jennifer Jason Leigh) arrive at the Grayson home, where she was invited to stick around for a few days. We also watched Amanda (Margarita Levieva) wake up from her coma and finally learn that Jack (Nick Wechsler) was indeed the father of her child. Phew. What's up next? The Grayson parents decide to have a second wedding, of course!
Captain Hook speaks! Colin O'Donoghue talks Once Upon a Time
WHAT WE LEARNED
Emily Wants Aiden's Gun: Emily (Emily VanCamp), obviously up to something, perhaps even, um revenge, needs the gun Aiden (Barry Sloane) killed Gordon Murphy (James Morrison) with. What does Aiden need in return, in addition to, of course the employ of a cheeky retort to her request? A date to the upcoming Grayson re-wedding! There's no better place to bring Emily. The Graysons will surely just love to see her there! She will blend right in, and definitely not shake things up. Yeah right!
Mason and Amanda Chat About Scars: Oh golly, that Mason (Roger Bart) is dirtier than dirt, of course—but he can also be easily mislead, or purposefully lead, rather, right into an artificial crime scene. While he chats with Amanda, digging for details and badgering her on the authenticity of an alleged scar removal, Amanda lets slip the address of the dead Gordon Murphy. Where Emily, conveniently, has planted a cuff link and other evidence. Oh, and Gordon Murphy's body. This leads the cops to believe the dude's death is the handy work of one Conrad Grayson (Henry Czerny)—who just so happens to be in the midst of celebrating his second wedding to his former wife. Game, set, drama.
First look: Glee goes Grease!
Conrad Gives Victoria a Flashy Gun, to Keep Her Safe and Stylin': So, Conrad and Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) are about to tie the knot for a second time—because, really, what's more exciting than that?—when Victoria hears news that Conrad is about to be arrested for murder. Some unplanned reception entertainment is on the way! This news comes after Conrad takes his once again bride-to-be in private and gives her a beauty of a handgun, to protect herself, in sickness and in health. Poor Conrad doesn't know what's coming.
Daniel Still in Love With Emily?: Probably. Just as Conrad was about to be arrested, Emily and Daniel (Josh Bowman) get deep into a chat about what ifs. What if this was their wedding? What if they were still together and therefore still a smokin' hot couple? What if they were allowed to finish this conversation and get at the meat of a very dishy subject? What if...uh, never mind, the groom just got arrested.
Sorry, Charlotte Doesn't Want to Attend Your Wedding, Mom and Dad: We all know Charlotte (Christa B. Allen) has some mommy and daddy issues, so she's going to keep close the one person who makes her happy in life: Declan (Connor Paolo). Instead of going to her parents' sham of a second wedding, she opts for the bar's re-opening.
Catch up on AHS Asylum with the latest recap
Meanwhile, Jack Proposes to Amanda: And here we go. These two are gonna go ahead and get married. How sweet is it that he pops that question to her on a boat that shares her moniker? Answer: It's totally cute.
ONE-LINERS
"If we choose to, we can live in a world of discomforting illusions."—Emily
"A second chance at love, doesn't happen all that often, but a third and fourth, you must cast quite a spell."—Kara
"Taking a long-term plan off ice."—Emily
Gossip Girl reveals its final episode title and date
"As far as the Graysons go, they'll get what's coming to them."—Kara
"If your life was destroyed by the money that paid for this, you might think differently."—Emily
"If ever I can't protect you, I want to be sure you can protect yourself."—Conrad

'Hair' they go: Rock musical comes to Woodstock (video)
When actors command the stage, they create another persona. Not so,
however, with “Hair,” its director says, as the Castaway Players Theatre
Company brings the rock musical to Woodstock this weekend.
“No one in the ‘Tribe’ is acting,” said director Sean Matthew Whiteford, who founded the company in 2005. He was 17. “Everyone on stage is himself or herself. They share their souls with the audience.”
He didn’t hesitate when asked, among so many musicals from which to choose, why “Hair”?
“It’s great music,” he said. “I’ve been listening to it since I was 12 on my parents’ vinyl.
“The material lends itself to a certain
state of mind on different issues,” Whiteford added. “I did the show
five years ago and had no idea what I was in for.
“’Hair’ was a life-changing experience for me and everyone involved five years ago,” he said. “We were all so much happier, less stressed out in our normal lives. We were at peace — when we were not rehearsing.
“I was certainly familiar with traditional aspects of theater, but ‘Hair’ was the first rock musical and it broke all the rules,” he said. “It still shocks people.”
He also said he was taken aback by the unusual script: It’s almost completely unstructured, with minimal character development. Actors, with direction, must create the subtext.

Ann M. Butler
Ann M. Butler
1924 ~ 2012
Anna Mae Hughes Butler died October 29, 2012, at her home in Provo. She was born November 5, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, to Alfred Bailey and Lois Sumsion Hughes. She attended schools in Los Angeles, graduating from George Washington High School in 1942. Following graduation, she was employed at the Bank of America. Beginning October, 1946, she served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canadian Mission. During her mission she met Eliot Butler, a fellow missionary and the man who would become her life-long companion. Eliot and Ann were married September 17, 1949, in the Arizona Temple.
After their wedding, Eliot and Ann made their home in southern California, where Eliot resumed his studies at the California Institute of Technology, and Ann returned to her job at the Bank of America--until the birth of their first child one year later. For the next six years, Ann cared for the children-two more joined the family before Eliot received his PhD, kept them quiet in the evenings while Eliot studied, managed the household, and learned to do things the Butler way.
In 1956 Ann and Eliot moved to Provo, where they would spend most of the remainder of their lives. Ann immersed herself in homemaking, in teaching and caring for her children, serving in the church and participating in university activities. She was an accomplished seamstress, whose creations ranged from Easter dresses to backpacking equipment-including packs and tents. Ann did not simply send those last items off with her husband and children-she joined in camping and backpacking adventures to the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier, and elsewhere. She served with dedication in the church, as a teacher in the Primary and as a teacher and president of the Relief Society. Ann enjoyed bowling, and founded a BYU Women's Bowling League in the early 1970s.
She joined with Eliot in the building of three homes. She did not engage in the heavy construction work, but spent countless hours painting and sanding and finishing cabinets, and in selecting and purchasing materials. She provided a home away from home for hundreds of university students who came to Sunday dinner during the time Eliot served in a campus ward and stake. Her example of quiet faith and unselfish service are an inspiration to all who knew her.
After Eliot's retirement from the University in 1991, Ann joined him as he presided over the Philippines Bacolod Mission and the Philippines Missionary Training Center, and served two additional missions with him in the Philippines and the United States. She also spent a semester teaching at Qingdao University in China, and a year volunteering at Southern Virginia University.
Ann is survived by her brother, Delano B. Hughes, of Blaine, Washington, and her four children, Gail (Dennis) Cardon, of Cumming, Georgia, Anita (Kim) Ovard, of Minden, Nevada, Mark (Deanna) Butler, of Brooklyn, New York, and Lee (Wendy) Butler of University Heights, Ohio, and by 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sisters Marian and Larue.
We express heartfelt gratitude to Bertha and Olga (and Pablo and Sofia) and their families for the loving care they provided to Ann.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Pleasant View 4th Ward Chapel, 2900 N 650 E, Provo. Friends may call on Sunday, November 4, 2012, between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the church, and for one hour prior to the services Monday. Interment will be at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park.

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Review: “Maureen Ponderosa’s Wedding Massacre”
“The Gang Recycles Their Trash,” last week’s episode of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,‘
was hilarious, and we’re hoping they keep momentum up with tonight’s
episode “Maureen Ponderosa’s Wedding Massacre.” If nothing else, it’s a
great title.
The episode starts at 10:00PM on Friday the 13th somewhere outside of Philly with the Dennis, Charlie, Frank and Mac screaming and trying to find each other. They’re caught by the police, and are told they have some explaining to do. Yup, this is a Halloween episode.
At the police station they’re told there’s fifteen people injured, a groom missing half his face, and an absent bride. The boys say they’re innocent, though the interrogator notes they weren’t invited to the wedding. It turns out the bride is Dennis’s ex-wife, and he says that he wanted the wedding to happen. We then flashback to the Charlie, Dennis and Frank going to the wedding in the middle of a forest, and that Dennis wants the marriage to happen so he can stop paying alimony. Charlie suggests everything is creepy, and it turns out that Liam (Jimmi Simpson) is the groom, who acts like he’s on drugs and maybe doesn’t want to get married. Dennis tells the cop that someone wanted to ruin the wedding, and points to Frank. It then flashbacks to Frank and Dee showing up at the wedding, which Dennis intuits is so they can make a scene. Frank then admits that they were there to break up the wedding, and Frank then says they previous had a visitor at the bar who wanted them to break up the wedding. It’s Liam’s brother Ryan who says that his family hasn’t bred outside the bloodline for a thousand years. It turns out that Frank and Dee are there to sneak Ryan into the wedding. Frank is then confronted by someone he sponsors in AA, and Frank tells him he should drink or do drugs. The wedding is filled with weird people, and Dennis leaves to talk to Maureen who he wants to sign the final papers, but he’s distracted when Maureen reveals that she got a boob job, which is just enough time to keep him from getting the signature he needs.
Back at the party, Charlie notes that everyone looks like extras in horror movies. Back at the police station Charlie says they were zombies and does a Quint impression. Back at the wedding ceremony things are definitely weird. Frank and Dee bring Liam and Ryan together, but Liam doesn’t recognize Ryan with his fake mustache. Dee says she wants to take off, and Charlie and Mac say that the next time they saw her she attacked them. Dennis goes to break up Liam and Ryan talking, but he doesn’t need to – both have agreed the wedding is a good idea. Oh yeah, all the people at the wedding are acting like zombies, or maybe just inbred people.
Dennis says he messed up bad back at the wedding, but at the station, they have no idea what happened. Finally, someone is there to explain, and it’s Dee. It turns out that the guy Frank sponsored spiked the milk with bath salts. It also turns out that the reason why Dee freaked out is because Charlie and Mac wrecked her car. But what’s up with the missing bride? Big surprise: Dennis had sex with her, which is the real horror for Dennis. And then they’re free to go because Maureen posted their bail.
And solid episode from ‘Sunny.’ If this episode – and it may be the weakness of the show – wasn’t that funny, it’s plotted tight as a drum, and watching the pieces come into place is one of the show’s greatest assets. Even when things aren’t laugh out loud, it’s well directed, clever and sharp. This was a solid episode, but what say you? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

A Tweeted Invitation to a Same-Sex Wedding in China
Same-sex weddings are illegal in
China, a fact known to Lu Zhong, 24, and Liu Wangqiang, 20, when
they tweeted an invitation to theirs, via the Sina Weibo
microblog, on Sept. 22.
The big day would be Oct. 2, the two young men announced, and anyone was welcome to attend. For the precise location, a prospective guest needed only contact the instant chat address included in the tweet. And for those still unclear about the parties to be married, the couple attached several affectionate engagement photos. In the days that followed, they received RSVPs and a few hundred dollars worth of donations to defray the costs associated with what they hoped would be a traditional ceremony.
In some sense, there’s not that much new here. China’s first public (and illegal) gay marriage, so named by the media, took place in 2010 in the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu and was given sympathetic coverage by Communist Party-owned news outlets at the time. Proposals to legalize gay marriage have been introduced (and ignored) at the People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s mostly ceremonial rubber-stamp legislature, for almost a decade. Though there are no statistics on just how many gay marriages (public or private) have taken place, growing activism for the legalization of the unions attracts significant media and netizen attention.
One reason for the increased awareness is that China is opening up to the fact that it is home, by one expert’s calculation, to some 10 million marriages between gay men and straight women. A less common, but equally well-known analog is for a gay man and a lesbian to marry legally while remaining loyal to their same-sex partners. These sham marriages are closet-re-enforcing ruses pursued under social pressure to produce offspring, among other familial duties. They also have something that illegal gay marriages don’t: legal protections that range from the right of inheritance to the benefits of divorce law in the case of a marital breakdown.
Still, the ubiquity of sham legal marriages doesn’t guarantee the acceptance of legal marriages between same-sex partners any time soon. After all, in China homosexuality was illegal as recently as 1997 and listed as a psychosis as recently as 2001. Liu and Lu, as a public example of a committed gay couple, have positioned themselves within an ongoing public debate that places China’s traditional biases against homosexuality at odds with new demographic realities and a young, microblogging generation that prioritizes personal freedom.
The reaction to Lu and Liu’s invitation proved as much. Their tweet quickly garnered 500 re-tweets (or “forwards,” in Sina Weibo parlance) and nearly 200 comments, the vast majority of which were congratulatory and -- based on a brief scan -- seemingly offered by a predominantly youthful set of followers. That’s small-time traffic by the standards of China’s microblogs, but it was big enough to be noticed by the authorities in Ningde, the modest-sized city in Fujian province where the tweet announced that the wedding was supposed to be held.
According to a recently published interview with Lu, the local authorities were less than thrilled with the idea of a gay wedding in their jurisdiction, and in the days running up to the big day, they canvassed local hotels and karaokes (likely wedding venues) in hopes of finding and halting the ceremony.
Why? It’s unclear. The local government hasn’t released a statement, and in interviews and tweets the couple has been reluctant to describe or explain the government’s behavior. Still, Ningde is a smaller city in a largely rural province, and social norms there -- especially among the older generation and those in leadership -- are surely more conservative than in China’s bigger and more modern cities. Equally likely, the conservative, promotion-minded authorities weren’t keen to find themselves leading a city that microblogs would soon dub the home of “Fujian’s First Gay Marriage.”
Even government pressure could not deter Lu and Liu. In a daring bit of romantic bravado, they dropped whatever venue they’d originally planned for the wedding and instead led a motor scooter motorcade into the center of Ningde and held a very public ceremony. Video taken of the event suggests that it was attended by several hundred (at least) seemingly spontaneous well-wishers who, it can safely be assumed, would’ve reacted poorly to any law enforcement action against the young couple. The video was uploaded and began to circulate via microblogs, without impediment from online censors.
However, likely because the wedding took place in the midst of an eight-day national holiday that was enjoyed by journalists, too, it didn’t really generate much in the way of posts, stories or discussion until the middle of last week. By the time media outlets did pick up the story, their tone was sympathetic and congratulatory -- especially toward China for having such an open-minded attitude on gay marriage. Xinhua, the Communist Party-owned national news wire, headlined its Oct. 20 story, “Gay Wedding Reflects Growing Tolerance in China” and failed to mention the harassment and discrimination that Lu and Liu faced in Ningde. Rather, the article extolled the wedding as a sign of social progress against traditional biases toward gays and lesbians.
For all the sympathetic news coverage, China’s leading newspapers and news sites have yet to write editorials formalizing their sympathy toward to Lu and Liu, much less their support of gay marriage. This is no accident: Editorials printed in Communist Party-owned papers are tantamount to official position papers, and for now, at least, officials don’t appear ready to issue statements in favor of liberalizing marriage laws to permit a type of union that was a criminal offense not so long ago.
Still, there are prominent individual voices willing to write in favor of gay marriage and well-established venues willing -- and allowed -- to publish these opinions. Last Thursday, for example, Wu Chunmei, a prolific writer, published “The Ethical and Legal Challenges of the Fujian Marriage,” on a popular state-owned opinion site with wide editorial latitude. The essay has been widely syndicated and circulated in recent days, and the arguments it makes echo those that have been put forth in favor of gay marriage, in a less formal manner, on Chinese microblogs for the last several years:
“Our Law of Marriage expressly stipulates that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that means that same-sex marriage hasn’t been recognized by law yet. So, strictly speaking, the marriage of these two men is without legal validity or protection. Thus this extravagant wedding is just a cathartic scream by these gay men, as well as an overt provocation designed to challenge the marriage law and traditional morality. They’re expressing their aspirations, their longing for respect and confirmation, their quest for acceptance and blessings.”
Wu concludes her piece with a broad statement in favor of personal freedom against the incursions of the state. For many members of China’s older generations, it’s an alien theme (though by no means unacceptable). But for young Chinese raised in an era of ever-widening sexual freedom (both granted and grasped), the language she chooses is nothing less than self- evident:
“The creation of law is based on the principle that it does not encroach on the interests of the majority. At a time when the number of gays increases day by day, and people’s attitudes toward gay marriage become more and more open, why can’t homosexuals be accepted -- especially when they do no harm to other people and society?”
Ironically, Lu, when interviewed on Friday by a journalist with the Netease internet portal about his reasons for wanting a public wedding ceremony, avoided talk of social acceptance and change, and explained, simply: “I’m quite traditional, quite conservative, and I simply wanted the feeling of having a wedding.”
That’s hardly the angry cry of a social revolutionary, and perhaps such composed restraint bodes well for the future of gay unions in China. Whether or not it does, however, doesn’t appear to be Lu’s immediate concern: These days, he and Liu are on their honeymoon, crossing China by train.

TOMS Shoes vs. BOBS Shoes
TOMS Shoes vs. BOBS Shoes
While walking through the St. Augustine Premium Outlets, it is common to see signs in store windows that lure customers in and persuade them to shop. But, what one might find uncommon is a sign placed in the Skechers window advertising BOBS, a shoe line that gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need after every purchase.
Although BOBS has a generous mission, the launch of this shoe line has come under great scrutiny by avid TOMS buyers throughout the past two years.
TOMS Shoes began in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, an American traveler who had a goal to help children in need. After traveling to Argentina and seeing thousands of children barefoot, he started TOMS Shoes, a company that after every purchase would give a pair of shoes to a child in need. This movement is called the One for One, and has been successful in giving millions of shoes to children in need in over 40 countries worldwide.
On the other hand, BOBS was launched in 2010 by Skechers. BOBS, just like TOMS, gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need after every purchase through their own program “Soles 4 Souls”. BOBS was not advertised as much in 2010, but now one can see BOBS advertisements on television regularly.
Lea Blackburn, the owner of a shoe store “Tootsies” in Ponte Vedra said, “BOBS does not seem to be as popular as TOMS by any stretch of the imagination, but there are people that have heard of it.”
In addition to having a similar business model, many TOMS buyers are also upset that BOBS shoes and logos look almost identical to TOMS. With the four letter names, and similar type style, many TOMS buyers feel that BOBS have completely copied TOMS logo.
Chandler Carrocio, a Flagler student said, “Coming from a person who owns TOMS ,I think that Sketchers coming out with BOBS is very odd. They are so similar and I just don’t understand why they would come out with the same shoe and concept.”

Kayla Kruse struts at Fashion Week
MILFORD — Kayla Kruse's modeling career has come a long way in a short time, when she joined other leggy beauties on the runway recently at Fashion Week in New York City.
The 19-year-old model and Delaware Valley graduate admitted to being frightened by her experience. Fashion Week is a high stakes event: designers introduce their latest collections, and the media and buyers discover the latest trends. New York, London, Milan, and Paris have the most prominent fashion weeks in the world.
"The designers get a little crazy, and all the press is there,” said the five-foot-ten beauty. “I do get scared walking down the runway. I was scared of falling.”
On those six-inch heels she was wearing, it’s a real possibility.
It started with a pageant win
Kayla's first experience showing off clothes came at around age 6, when she and her cousin entered a pageant. Kayla noticed that her cousin and all the other girls wore fancy pageant dresses, while she wore her Easter dress. To her surprise, she won.
“After that I loved being in front of the camera and used to take pictures all the time," she said.
She got her first big modeling job all by herself. In 2010, she emailed Seventeen Magazine to ask if they needed girls. The magazine invited her to Prospect Park in Brooklyn for a photo shoot, and she appeared in an August 2010 issue.
“Meeting all the nice people" is her favorite part of the work. "Everybody is so nice, the photographers have been so nice," she said.
Kayla feared the designers might be "mean, nasty and crude, but they weren’t.” She also likes meeting other models from all over the world.
“Playing dress up" is fun, she said. "I love fashion, and this made me learn so much about fashion. Many of the designers give me the clothes after I model."
Kayla had a few modeling jobs while in high school. She’s worked for Harper’s Bazaar and has been featured on Style.com, along with some modeling on a smaller scale.
One month ago, she signed with Boss Modles New York, which led to her Fashion Week gig. She found the agency through models.com, and sent in photos.
“I always wanted to model but was scared to go to the city and get denied," she said. "Luckily I went to two different agencies, and they both wanted to sign me. My agent is so nice and easy to talk to."
The girl next door
Kayla lives in Milford and works at a TJ Maxx store in New Jersey. The job helps pay for her commute to modeling gigs in the city.
Her burgeoning celebrity is catching up with her. Some co-workers have already asked for her autograph.
She puts her height to uses other than modeling.
“I love basketball," she said. "I used to play basketball" — and she still does, with family and friends. "But now I’m more focused on modeling."
The most difficult part has been maintaining her weight.
“I eat junk food," she said. "I love cheeseburgers, fries. Now I try to eat healthier food like vegetables and chicken.”
It's also tough dealing with not being chosen. She’s glad she didn’t have to go to casting calls while still in high school.
“There are so many beautiful, skinny girls at casting calls," she said. "You’re turned down a lot."
It's not enough to be pretty. You must have "the look" designers are looking for.
But she believes dealing with being turned down has made her stronger as a person.
“I take it as a learning experience," she said. If she'd encountered rejection as a high school student, she said, "I’d think, ‘My God, I’m so ugly.’ Now I know I’ll get another opportunity. If I went to the city while in high school it would be so much harder to deal with.”
Kayla wants to live in the city someday to be closer to her modeling work. But she’s heard some “weird stories” about the goings-on in some apartments shared by models. Her family is her greatest support, she said, and hopes eventually to share an apartment in the city with her sister.
If she wasn’t a model, what would she be?
“An FBI agent, actually,” she said. “I’m taking online college courses now. Last year I went full time.”
She wants to major in criminal justice, perhaps eventually transferring to John Jay College.
But you don’t need to be a detective to see that Kayla has brains as well as beauty, and a bright future beckoning.

Messe Duesseldorf Plans Launch of Footwear Event in Shanghai
Messe Duesseldorf Plans Launch of Footwear Event in Shanghai
The new show will be held as part of the China International Footwear & Leathergoods Exhibition – CIFL at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
The event will be supported by the China Commerce Association for General Merchandise (CCAGM) - the state retail federation whose members include all the well-known department stores and shopping centers in the country - and Adsale, a long-standing partner of Messe Düsseldorf.
Another edition of GDS Select also is planned in autumn 2013 to take place parallel to the CHIC fashion fair in Beijing.
The new shows in Shanghai and Beijing will fit neatly into Messe Duesseldorf’s show portfolio, which already includes GDS – international event for shoes & accessories and GLOBAL SHOES – trade show for sourcing, held twice annually in Duesseldorf, Germany.
Through its subsidiary Messe Düsseldorf China, the company has been active in China since 1999 with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Shenyang.
With incomes on the rise, the Chinese population is developing a taste for higher quality consumer goods – including clothing, footwear and bags, according to Messe Duesseldorf.
In the shoe sector alone, experts anticipate the market share for footwear in the mid to high-end price range to increase from the current 60 percent level to 70 percent in 2020 – with the premium segment expanding as well.
GDS Select 2013 will be a show for selected international brands and will be held in its own pavilion alongside the China International Footwear & Leathergoods Exhibition.
Both events will only be open to trade visitors from the fashion retail and industry segments. On a gross exhibition space of 215,200 square feet, more than 200 exhibitor collections will be showcased.
The exhibitors’ collections will be complemented by a comprehensive supporting program, including design competitions, as well as seminars and lectures focusing on fashion and business aspects.
To mark the event, the CCAGM will invite some 1,000 buyers from large department stores across China to a summit meeting for the shoe sector. Another highlight will be the Shanghai Fashion Week which will overlap with the trade fairs.

Our Wedding Story: Seni Adebajo-Olowa & Adeyinka Ojo
Our Wedding Story: Seni Adebajo-Olowa & Adeyinka Ojo
BN Our Wedding Story is here again! We have always been fascinated by couples who complete all their wedding ceremonies on the same day. It is not an easy feat and it takes a lot of energy and organization so we are so excited to show off Seni Adebajo-Olowa & Adeyinka Ojo‘s big day!
The couple tied the knot in 2012 and did it in lovely style. Seni made sure her love of gold was clear with her accessories and the gold embroidered accents of her wedding dress. Her beau Adeyinka was very stylish in his grey suit paired with a black bow tie and suspenders.
For all brides out there, the bride, Seni says, “My one tip for brides to be is that you really don’t need to be stressed before the d-day!…start planning early, pray hard and prepare to have a blast on your once-in-a-lifetime day!“
When asked about what advice they would give other couples on the path towards their big day, the newlyweds told BN Weddings, “Filter through whatever advice people give you! there’s no one like you out there, make your own memories, mistakes and special moments!“
How Seni & Adeyinka Met
My firm is retained as an external solicitor to his bank, so on one of my numerous visit to the bank in October 2009, I noticed him.
I thought to myself – “hot looking” and “nice shirt” but he didn’t notice me AT ALL!
The officer attending to me told me to come back the next day after keeping me waiting so I kind of left a tad bit upset and didn’t give him another thought.
The next time I went there, I had totally forgotten he existed. I picked the documents I came for and had just made a beeline for my car when I heard “hi, excuse me“….the voice was deep and hot enough to stop me in my tracks! I turned and it was the same guy! He said “Hi, my name is Yinka and please I would like to have your number“. My first thought was “my number ke?you didn’t even ask for my name!“….and his confidence irritated the hell outta me :)
….So I opened my mouth to berate him and the stupidest thing came out “ehn…I hope you’re not married o!“….I laughed out of shame because I couldn’t believe what I just said….He looked at me quizzically and said “cant i have your number for business purposes since you’re a lawyer and all“.
To save face, I hurriedly gave him my business card and ran to my car. It was later that he confessed that he noticed me on the same day I noticed him and begged the officer I came to see to please call him the next time I come to the bank (rolling eyes!)…….and that’s how it all began.

Companies Target European Poor With Third World Marketing
Companies Target European Poor With Third World Marketing
Three years into the global financial crisis, multinational companies that had made huge profits during the consumer boom that preceded it faced a major dilemma: people were no longer buying the expensive premium products that once sold well in Europe.
That was the complaint from the chief of Unilever’s [ULVR-LN 2292.00 --- UNCH ] European operations, Jan Zijderveld, who told the German edition of the Financial Times last August that “poverty has returned to Europe.”
His plan to tackle the challenge was for the world’s third-largest consumer goods company, which owns such brands as Flora margarine and Persil laundry detergent, to market its products as if to customers in Third World countries.
The company would sell more laundry detergent to cash-strapped consumers by offering smaller, cheaper packages, a strategy long employed in Asian countries such as Indonesia, where average monthly wages are less than $400.
In Greece, the country hardest hit by the crisis affecting the euro single currency, Unilever now offers mashed potatoes and mayonnaise in small bargain packages, and markets tea, olive oil and other basic products under cheaper generic brand labels.
Others are also adjusting their strategies.
Cut-price “austerity” menus are now common in restaurants across Europe. In France, elite chef Alain Ducasse is trying to entice the masses with a “buy one, get one free” deal in 1,000 participating restaurants, some with Michelin stars.

Spare Times for Children for Sept
You’ve probably heard of the cow that jumped over the moon. That’s an impressive trick, but what about the jade rabbit that actually lives there and devotes its life to fancy chemistry?
That rabbit, a beautiful woman and a brave archer will all play roles on Sunday when the Museum of Chinese in America presents its Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Family Day, honoring one of China’s most important holidays.
“You can equate it almost with Thanksgiving,” said Karen L. Lew, the museum’s director of education and visitor services. “It’s a celebration of the fall harvest and families coming together.”
The most important reunion is that of the woman Chang-Er and the archer Ho Yi. In Chinese legend the emperor had given Ho Yi the elixir of life as a reward. Ho Yi hid this magical substance, but his wife, Chang-Er, found it and swallowed it.
“She discovered immediately that she could fly,” Ms. Lew said. Chang-Er soared straight to the moon, but because of her transgression she was not allowed to return. In one version of the tale the jade rabbit, her sole companion, grinds herbs forever, trying to recreate the lost potion.
From then on Ho Yi and Chang-Er live apart, except during the festival. “At this time the moon’s at its brightest, and he can come and visit her,” Ms. Lew said.
At noon Chinese Theater Works will present “Chang-Er Flies to the Moon,” conceived by Kuang-Yu Fong and Stephen Kaplin, and directed and designed by Mr. Kaplin. The show tells the festival story with shadow puppets. (Left, Chang-Er and the rabbit.)
Children can also make their own puppets, as well as colorful lantern designs and folded-paper decorations. And they will learn about the festival’s signature dish, mooncakes — legend says these filled pastries were used to conceal messages of rebellion against Mongol invaders during the 1300s — and create them from clay.
The day will also include gallery tours, art demonstrations and, at 1:30 p.m., a reading and craft workshop for children 4 to 8 by Kam Mak, author and illustrator of “My Chinatown: One Year in Poems.” He salutes a purely terrestrial neighborhood, but those seeking a glimpse of the other kind can gaze upward.
“Sometimes,” Ms. Lew said, “people say when you look at the moon, you can see the outline of the jade rabbit and Chang-Er.”
(10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 215 Centre Street, between Howard and Grand Streets, Lower Manhattan, 212-619-4785, mocanyc.org. Free with admission: $7; $4 for students and 65+; free for under 12 and members.) LAUREL GRAEBER
For Children
‘Archaeology Zone: Discovering Treasures From Playgrounds to Palaces’ (Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday) Children will step into the shoes of an explorer like Indiana Jones in this permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum, but the adventures will be purely scholarly. Still, there is plenty of excitement in analyzing artifacts like a jar handle, a clay jug and a bangle and figuring out the purpose behind ancient pieces like a Greek helmet and a bull-shaped vessel. This interactive show, for ages 3 to 10, also includes a recreated room from the Ottoman period (about 1900), where young archaeologists can dress in costume. From 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., except this Tuesday, when the museum will close at 2 p.m. for Yom Kippur; until 8 p.m. on Thursdays; 1109 Fifth Avenue, at 92nd Street, (212) 423-3200, thejewishmuseum.org. Free with admission: $12; $10 for 65+; $7.50 for students; free for under 12 and members.

10 Signs You're Not as Rich as You Could Be
10 Signs You're Not as Rich as You Could Be
Are you frustrated with your finances? Drowning in debt? Or just not sure where your money goes each month?
Saving more of your paycheck doesn't have to mean pinching pennies and clipping coupons; sometimes all it takes is a new perspective and some good habits. For a few (easy) ways to grow your net worth, consider these 10 Signs You're Not as Rich as You Could Be:
1. There's a designer logo on your handbag, shoes, or clothing. Don't pay a premium to flaunt a famous name on your attire (they should be paying you for all that free advertising!). Many designer items are made in the same Chinese factories as less expensive goods. The only message those logos convey is that you paid too much.
2. You have a key to a public storage unit. The problem here is twofold: you spent a lot of money on things you don't use, and you continue to waste money on storing them. The best course of action: sell the contents of the unit on Craigslist, eBay, or at a garage sale, and hand over the keys.
3. Your house has more bedrooms than people. Consider if you really need all that square footage. Downsizing to a smaller abode can save you money in myriad ways: you'll reduce your rent or mortgage payment, utilities, and the amount of stuff you need to buy to "fill" your space.
4. You have no idea what your tap water tastes like. Packaged drinks (like juice, soda, and bottled water) can do a number on your grocery budget. Quench your thirst with tap water instead--the recommended eight glasses of water a day cost only about $1 per year.
5. You often receive compliments on the color of your hair, toenails, or fingernails. If you're a regular at the salon, cut your visits in half -- or better yet, eliminate them altogether. Have a spa day at home instead: light some candles, put on some relaxing music, and give yourself a DIY manicure or pedicure.
6. Your TV channels number in the double (or triple) digits. Drop the expensive cable, fiber optic, or satellite television services -- and put your money and time to better use. Many shows are available for viewing on the internet; and if you're a movie buff, a subscription service like Netflix may be more economical than premium channels.
7. Your car has a fancy hood ornament. A car is a means of transportation from point A to point B -- not a reflection of your identity or success (as marketers would have you believe). Luxury cars are more expensive to purchase, maintain, and insure. Sell that money-guzzler and instead of looking rich, be rich.
8. Your refrigerator is empty. When there's no food in the house, it's much too tempting to eat out (or stop for takeout). Action plan: make a menu for the week, shop with a grocery list, and stock your fridge with fresh food that's easy to prepare. Consider cooking several meals at once and freezing them; they'll be ready-to-eat on those nights when you're too tired to cook.
9. You set foot in a shopping mall more than once last month. The best way to save money is to stay out of stores -- it's an incredibly easy way to preserve your wealth. And by all means, don't shop for entertainment; limit your purchases to necessities, and spend your leisure time at the park instead.
10. You're still paying off holiday credit card bills. You'll have much happier holidays by heeding the following advice: never buy gifts on a credit card. Tailor your budget to the cash you have on hand. If you have little to none, don't despair: give people handmade items, baked goods, or the gift of your time. It'll be much more appreciated than anything bought in a store!

Karats describe how pure the gold within a pair of earrings
Karats describe how pure the gold within a pair of earrings is; the higher the percentage of gold in the earrings, the larger the karat. The following are the most common Karat ratings you will encounter when shopping:24K = Pure Gold18K = 75% Gold (18 parts gold and 6 parts other metal)14K = 58.3% Gold (14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal)12K = 50% Gold (12 parts gold and 12 parts other metal)10K = 41.7% Gold (10 parts gold and 14 parts other metal)In the course of your shopping you will come across 14K gold frequently. 14K gold earrings tend to be the most popular because they contain more than 50% gold and are usually reasonably priced; not as expensive as 24K gold earrings and yet not cheap enough to be 10K earrings.
However, they must make sure and wear only gold earrings with a high gold content. Unfortunately, this makes the purchase more expensive, for 18K or 24K earrings are generally required in order to avoid an allergic reaction.Gold is very versatile and can easily be worked into any shape a metallurgist has in mind. The limit to shaping gold is only as restrained as the imagination of the metallurgist. One ounce of gold can be compressed into an extremely thin sheet that is ten square feet in size. Whether gold is hammered into thin sheets or strands, the metal still remains sturdy. The most important element of shopping for gold earrings is the karat factor.
If you want to stay on your girl's good side you want to be sure and avoid 10K.While 24K gold earrings are nice and your girlfriend or wife will appreciate them, they are also not very practical. Because 24K is pure gold it is quite soft and susceptible to damage, not the sort of practical jewelry accessory for daily wear. It is best to decide on a pair of gold earrings that contain some amount of another metal, so that the earrings are durable, and the price stays low.Gold can be made into different colors, which means you will have to decide on one when shopping. By adding other metals to gold when creating the earrings metallurgists can create white gold, or by adding copper or silver can create a rosy pink or greenish color to the earrings, respectively.
